Dear Friends!

Welcome to Chelyabinsk!

I am pleased to welcome guests and participants of the European Judo Championship!
Holding of the European Championship is a great honor and responsibility for the Russian sport community and for us, residents of Chelyabinsk region. For the first time Russia gained the right to organize such major judo competitions among adult sportsmen. It is particularly important that the event will be held in the Olympic year, on the eve of the Summer Games in London. We exerted a lot of efforts to make the stay of sportsmen and guests in Chelyabinsk comfortable and memorable. The capital of the South Ural became a place of attraction for millions of fans and admirers of the art of judo all around the world. There is a good few of them in Chelyabinsk region too. Our judo school numbers many famous names – Kharis Yusupov and Alexandr Miller, honored coaches, Grigory Verichev, four-time champion of Europe, Vitaly Makarov, world champion. Year by year young sportsmen keep developing their skills. In our region almost 5 thousand people are studying philosophy and fighting techniques today. Apart from the Olympic Training Center, 38 schools of Japanese fight operate in the region. People in Chelyabinsk region are really fond of judo and know a lot about it. I am sure that after the championship even more children and adolescents will attend our sports centers. I wish success and worthy wins to the sportsmen, from the bottom of my heart, as well as brilliant and unforgettable show to fans.

Mikhail YUREVICH,
Governor of Chelyabinsk region
